So earlier this week, I was happily surprised when I put out a plea on Facebook for a pizza delivery and it was answered. It was delicious, and hit just the right spot, concluding a very hungry day. As I left work and headed toward the elevators, I still had 3 slices of pizza remaining, with not much thought as to my plans for them. I got to the elevator, waited for the doors to open, and went to step in…but, a Mr. George Lee, one of Knowlton’s 3 janitors, was stepping out at the same time. First thought I had “Want some pizza?”. A little confused and a little dirty handed, Mr. George rushed to the bathroom, washed his hands, grabbed a paper towel, and came back to get a slice of pizza, delighted as ever. We each went our own way. He didn’t know me, I barely knew him, but I’ve never seen this man without a smile on his face, or passed him without him saying hello to a total stranger.
Today, he came into my work (the woodshop) with a personal project, still dressed in his osu issue work clothes, grinning ear to ear because he had an idea in mind. He wandered around the shop for a sec, looking a little confused, so I approached him and asked if I could help. What seemed like a complicated thing to him, and a lot to ask for, turned out to really be just a few minutes of my day doing what I could for him.
**He had a relatively small wooden object (a decoration of some sort) that had a few chipped places where the natural color was revealed. He wanted to know if there was a way to cover them up and make them look the same color as the rest of the object**
As I was helping Mr. George, he would very causally ask “Am I bothering you?”..”How’d you get this job?”.. “What would your title be here?”.. “What year are you?”.. and “Is this something I can do on my own to my deck at home (in reference to staining it)?” …. Genuinely curious about everything. What should have taken me about 4 minutes to do for him, turned into a 25 minute conversation. This man has been a loyal OSU employee since freaking 2001. Spent 10 years in transportation before being laid off because the department was sold to a private business. You know what he did after that? Applied FIFTY times to obtain the job he has now. For 48 of those times, he was told “We just hired someone for that spot, sorry.” Then he was rejected once, and then finally accepted. And you know what he does now, for the past 2 years, with the most approachable character I’ve ever encountered? He cleans the bathrooms here. Not the hallways..not the classrooms.. but the bathrooms, and just that.
I am happy to say, I have a new friend named George Lee, he’s a janitor, and he’s cool as hell.
I went on a journey of self discovery today
